June is Internet Safety Month
June is National Internet Safety Month: Protecting Youth in a Digital World
In today’s hyper-connected world, our children are growing up online—learning, socializing, and exploring through screens from a young age. While technology offers incredible benefits, it also introduces new risks that parents, educators, and communities must work together to address. That’s why every June, we recognize National Internet Safety Month, a time to raise awareness and take action to protect our youth in the digital space.
Why Internet Safety Matters
The internet can expose youth to inappropriate content, online predators, cyberbullying, and privacy risks. According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), reports of online exploitation have increased significantly over the past few years. At the Indiana Center for Prevention of Youth Abuse and Suicide (ICPYAS), we believe proactive prevention and education are key to keeping children safe.
Empowering Families Through Education
As part of our digital safety initiatives, ICPYAS proudly delivers NetSmartz, an engaging program created by NCMEC that teaches kids how to be safe and responsible online. Through videos, discussions, and age-appropriate activities, students learn about topics like:
Protecting personal information
Recognizing and avoiding online predators
Responding to cyberbullying
Understanding the consequences of sharing content
We also offer training and resources for parents, caregivers, and educators so they can have informed, open conversations with children about their digital lives.
4 Tips for Internet Safety This Month
Talk early and often – Regular conversations about online behavior help kids feel comfortable coming to you with concerns.
Set clear boundaries – Establish rules for screen time, social media use, and app downloads.
Use parental controls – These tools can help monitor and restrict access to inappropriate content.
Stay involved – Know which platforms your child uses, who they’re talking to, and what content they’re sharing.
